63 years ago, a British exhibitor published a letter to the Chinese people in Indonesia's "Life": "I can tell my friends in China that I admire you very much and wish you prosperity in trade and industrial development. China. The enthusiasm and hard work of the people have produced praiseworthy and praiseworthy results, which can be regarded as one of the miracles of the twentieth century."

Today, this British prophecy has come true: China, the Canton Fair and Guangzhou have all become development miracles in the twentieth century and the new century.

The China Import and Export Fair (named China Export Commodities Fair before 2007), founded in 1957, is a comprehensive international trade fair with the longest history, the largest scale and the best transaction effect in China. The fair is held in Guangzhou. , Its well-known name in China is: Canton Fair.

The Associated Press reviewed the Canton Fair in 1957 in a 1995 report: "The first Canton Fair was held in a hall. Only 1,200 foreigners participated. The total transaction volume was US$17.5 million. Most of the products are Chinese specialties, such as silk."

Even so, the Canton Fair still attracted the attention of foreign media. In the eyes of foreign media, the Canton Fair is a window into the mysterious China. The US "Business Daily" believes that "Canton Fair was China's only window to the international market in the 1960s and 1970s." According to the United Press, the Canton Fair provides “foreigners a rare opportunity to take a glance at this country”.

Keiji Sawanoi, head of the China Group of Japan’s Toshoku Company, recalled in an article written for Japan’s "International Trade" weekly newspaper, "Until the time when China resumed its legal seat in the United Nations in the early 1970s, the Canton Fair had the right to support the future, including Japan. The role of businessmen from countries that have established diplomatic relations with China’s situation".

In 1978, China ushered in reform and opening up. At that time, China was getting rid of poverty, moving toward prosperity, and marching toward science and technology. Guangzhou, a city that should be opened up, was ahead of the trend and was at the forefront of reform and opening up, setting the country's No. 1 with countless systems and mechanisms that broke the ice. "It has explored valuable experience for national reform.

Before the opening of the Canton Fair in the spring of 1979, it coincided with the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. Guangzhou agreed to an American company to advertise its products in the "Guangzhou Daily" in order to cooperate with the Canton Fair. In China at the time, there were only a handful of media publishing advertisements. 1979 is often regarded as the first year of the advertising industry in New China.

In 1979, more than 38,000 merchants participated in the Canton Fair from more than 110 countries and regions. The Canton Fair provided 40,000 products, including Chinese editions of Shakespeare’s works, beautiful cheongsams and textiles designed according to foreign requirements. Before the opening of the Canton Fair, rooms in major hotels in Guangzhou were fully booked. The long history of the Canton Fair has become a well-known symbol of China's foreign trade.

By the end of the last century, economic reforms had made the Canton Fair unprecedented in scale. Although the Canton Fair is no longer a window for foreigners to observe China, it is still a barometer of China's foreign trade. The US "Business Daily" believes that the Canton Fair will enable foreign businessmen to "estimate the latest trends in China's trade." "The Globe and Mail" said: "The Canton Fair defeated all trade fairs.... Although many multinational companies in the world have established offices in China, the use of the Canton Fair is still the most convenient way to negotiate business. Can make a bigger business."

In 2001, China joined the World Trade Organization. China has embarked on a model of deep integration with the world, sharing opportunities and growing together. The Canton Fair continues to shoulder the important task of "an extremely important place for negotiation in China's foreign trade." At that time, Guangzhou was regarded as the engine of China's economy.

In 2006, China decided to rename the "China Export Commodities Fair" to the "China Import and Export Commodities Fair" starting from the 101st session. The one-word difference indicates that China's economy has shifted from an export-oriented one to a domestic demand-driven one, and the characteristics of the Canton Fair are more “wider”.
